The Sandpiper

2006_0617Thomson0015.JPG Monday, 31 August 09 - 05:03 PM (GMT -06:00)
By John C Thomson in General

The Sandpiper
by Robert Peterson

She was six years old when I first met her on the beach near where I live.

I drive to this beach, a distance of three or four miles, whenever the world

begins to close in on me. She was building a sand castle or something

and looked up, her eyes as blue as the sea.

"Hello," she said.

I answered with a nod, not really in the mood to bother with a small child.

"I'm building," she said...

"I see that.. What is it?" I asked, not really caring.

"Oh, I don't know, I just like the feel of sand."

That sounds good, I thought, and slipped off my shoes.

A sandpiper glided by.

"That's a joy," the child said.

"It's a what?"

"It's a joy. My mama says sandpipers come to bring us joy."

The bird went gliding down the beach. Good-bye joy, I muttered to myself,
hello pain, and turned to walk on. I was depressed, my life seemed
completely out of balance.

"What's your name?" She wouldn't give up.

"Robert," I answered. "I'm Robert Peterson."

"Mine's Wendy... I'm six."

"Hi, Wendy."

She giggled. "You're funny," she said.

In spite of my gloom, I laughed too and walked on.
Her musical giggle followed me.

"Come again, Mr. P," she called. "We'll have another happy day.."

The next few days consisted of a group of unruly Boy Scouts, PTA meetings,
and an ailing mother. The sun was shining one morning as I took my hands out
of the dishwater. I need a sandpiper, I said to myself, gathering up my coat.

The ever-changing balm of the seashore awaited me. The breeze was
chilly but I strode along, trying to recapture the serenity I needed.

"Hello, Mr.. P," she said. "Do you want to play?"
"What did you have in mind?" I asked, with a twinge of annoyance.
"I don't know. You say."

"How about charades?" I asked sarcastically.
The tinkling laughter burst forth again. "I don't know what that is."

"Then let's just walk."
Looking at her, I noticed the delicate fairness of her face.
"Where do you live?" I asked.
"Over there." She pointed toward a row of summer cottages.

Strange, I thought, in winter.
"Where do you go to school?"
"I don't go to school.. Mommy says we're on vacation"

She chattered little girl talk as we strolled up the beach, but my mind was
on other things. When I left for home, Wendy said it had been a happy day.
Feeling surprisingly better, I smiled at her and agreed.

Three weeks later, I rushed to my beach in a state of near panic. I was in no
mood to even greet Wendy. I thought I saw her mother on the porch and felt
like demanding she keep her child at home.

"Look, if you don't mind," I said crossly when Wendy caught up with me, "I'd
rather be alone today." She seemed unusually pale and out of breath.
"Why?" she asked.
I turned to her and shouted, "Because my mother died!" and thought,
My God, why was I saying this to a little child?
"Oh," she said quietly, "then this is a bad day."
"Yes," I said, "and yesterday and the day before and -- oh, go away!"

"Did it hurt?" she inquired.

"Did what hurt?" I was exasperated with her, with myself.

"When she died?"

"Of course it hurt!" I snapped, misunderstanding,

wrapped up in myself. I strode off.

A month or so after that, when I next went to the beach, she wasn't there..

Feeling guilty, ashamed, and admitting to myself I missed her, I went up

to the cottage after my walk and knocked at the door. A drawn looking

young woman with honey-colored hair opened the door.

"Hello," I said, "I'm Robert Peterson. I missed your little girl today

and wondered where she was."

"Oh yes, Mr. Peterson, please come in. Wendy spoke of you so much.

I'm afraid I allowed her to bother you. If she was a nuisance,

please, accept my apologies."

"Not at all --! she's a delightful child." I said, suddenly realizing

that I meant what I had just said.

"Wendy died last week, Mr. Peterson. She had leukemia

Maybe she didn't tell you."

Struck dumb, I groped for a chair. I had to catch my breath.

"She loved this beach, so when she asked to come, we couldn't say no.

She seemed so much better here and had a lot of what she called happy days.

But the last few weeks, she declined rapidly..." Her voice faltered, "She left

something for you, if only I can find it. Could you wait a moment while I look?"

I nodded stupidly, my mind racing for something to say to this lovely young

woman. She handed me a smeared envelope with "MR. P" printed in bold

childish letters. Inside was a drawing in bright crayon hues -- a yellow beach,

a blue sea, and a brown bird. Underneath was carefully printed:

A SANDPIPER TO BRING YOU JOY.

Tears welled up in my eyes, and a heart that had almost forgotten to love

opened wide.. I took Wendy's mother in my arms. "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry,

I'm so sorry," I uttered over and over, and we wept together. The precious little

picture is framed now and hangs in my study. Six words -- one for each year

of her life -- that speak to me of harmony, courage, and undemanding love.

A gift from a child with sea blue eyes and hair the color of sand

-- who taught me the gift of love.

NOTE: This is a true story sent out by Robert Peterson. It happened over 20

years ago and the incident changed his life forever. It serves as a reminder

to all of us that we need to take time to enjoy living and life and each other.

The price of hating other human beings is loving oneself less...

Life is so complicated, the hustle and bustle of everyday traumas

can make us lose focus about what is truly important

or what is only a momentary setback or crisis.

This week, be sure to give your loved ones an extra hug, and by all means,

take a moment... even if it is only ten seconds, to stop and smell the roses.

This comes from someone's heart, and is read by many

and now I share it with you...

Someone once said:
"A coincidence is an occurrence in which God has chosen to remain annonymous"

May God Bless everyone who receives this! There are NO coincidences!

Everything that happens to us happens for a reason. Never brush aside
anyone as insignificant. Who knows what they can teach us?

I wish for you, a sandpiper..

CarInsuranceOnline.net gives information on the last Cash for Clunkers news and gives drivers a way to compare car insurance online.

Chicago, Ill. (Vocus/PRWEB ) August 24, 2009 -- Cash for Clunkers wraps up today, sending many last minute shoppers to their computers to find car insurance online. According to CarInsuranceOnline.net, the quickest and easiest way to get the most complete coverage at an affordable rate is to compare car insurance online and find a cheap car insurance online quote.

The incredibly successful Cash for Clunkers program, officially referred to as the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS), nearly ran out of money before getting a boost from congress recently. The program has invested $3 billion in to the rebate system that helps consumers buy or lease a more environmentally friendly vehicle and boost auto sales. Since the beginning of the program, auto dealers have made deals worth over $1.9 billion and generated more than 457,000 vehicle sales. Now the program is set to end today.

NHTSA has clarified that consumers that still want to purchase a new vehicle that are not yet on dealers lots can still be eligible for the CARS program if they reach a valid purchase and sales agreement with the dealer. They will still be eligible for the $3,500 or $4,500 rebate when the older qualifying vehicle is traded in.

People who have or will purchase new vehicles will need to go car insurance shopping. CarInsuranceOnline.net recommends that those looking for a cheap rate should compare car insurance online before choosing a policy. Then, after looking at multiple options, should choose the most complete and affordable car insurance online quote.

Americans Recognize Risk of Fire, But Don’t Worry About It

Americans Recognize Risk of Fire, But Don’t Worry About It

A nationwide survey conducted by Bethesda, MD-based Society for Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) revealed that more Americans believe fire is the event that will most likely cause harm to them or their family when compared to lighting strikes, hurricanes, earthquakes and floods. Forty-five percent of the survey respondents selected fire. At the same time, only 18 percent of the respondents said they worry about the dangers of fire more than once a year.

Bethesda, MD (Vocus/PRWEB ) August 24, 2009 -- A nationwide survey conducted by Bethesda, MD-based Society for Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) revealed that more Americans believe fire is the event that will most likely cause harm to them or their family when compared to lighting strikes, hurricanes, earthquakes and floods. Forty-five percent of the survey respondents selected fire.

News Image

At the same time, only 18 percent of the respondents said they worry about the dangers of fire more than once a year.

“As a nation, we face widespread misconceptions about fire safety, and that’s worrisome,” said Chris Jelenewicz, Engineering Program Manager at SFPE. “Everyone should recognize that thousands of people die each year in fires, and be aware that fire safety features in a building play a critical in protecting people, property and the environment from fire.”

Americans are more likely to be harmed by fire when compared to natural disasters. For example, although natural disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes are covered widely in the national news media, many more people die each year as a result of fire.

Each year in the United States there are over 1.5 million fires, many of which could be prevented. As a result, more than 3,000 people die and more than 17,000 are injured. Direct property loss due to fires is estimated to be over $10 billion. Additionally, more than 100 firefighters die in the line of duty.

Fire protection engineers devote their careers to protecting people, property and the environment from fire. They analyze how buildings are used, how fires start and grow, and how fires affect people and property. They use the latest technologies to design systems to control fires, alert people to danger, and provide means for escape. Fire protection engineers also work closely with other professionals, including engineers of other disciplines, architects, state and local building officials, and local fire departments to build fire safe communities.

“Although fire protection engineers play an important role in protecting society, they are still high demand,” Jelenewicz added. “The number of available jobs far exceeds the supply.”

The survey commissioned by the Society for Fire Protection Engineers and conducted in February, 2009 by Synovate, polled more than one thousand American adults. The findings have a margin of error of plus (+) or minus (-) three percent. More information about this survey can be found in the Media & Press section of the SFPE website at http://www.sfpe.org.

About Society of Fire Protection Engineers
Organized in 1950, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) is the professional organization that represents engineers engaged in fire protection worldwide. Through its membership of over 5,000 professionals and 67 national and international chapters, SFPE advances the science and practice of fire protection engineering while maintaining a high ethical standard. SFPE and its members serve to make the world a safer place by reducing the burden of unwanted fire through the application of science and technology. To become a member, go to www.sfpe.org.

Family Reunion: Gearing Up For Fight or Flight?

Family Reunion: Gearing Up For Fight or Flight?

New research shows the ability to hold crucial conversations is key to enjoying a family reunion

Whether it's precedent, long-standing family dynamics, or plain old fear, something tells us that remaining silent will yield more results than confronting our relative's bad behavior
Uncle Fester, I notice you are sick. And I noticed you've been dipping your chips in the bowl after biting half off . . . .

Provo, UT (Vocus/PRWEB ) July 7, 2009 -- Len Wittrock avoids family reunions and gatherings when he knows his younger brother will be in attendance. In the past, Wittrock's brother used each reunion as an opportunity to confront him and tell him why he vehemently opposed everything he and his wife believed in. Despite Wittrock's efforts to look past their differences, his brother continued to bait him with rude and insulting comments.

New research from the authors of the New York Times bestsellser, Crucial Conversations, shows four out of five people have had miserable family reunions plagued by their relative's bad
New research from the authors of the New York Times bestsellser, Crucial Conversations, shows four out of five people have had miserable family reunions plagued by their relative's bad

Unfortunately, new research reveals Wittrock is not alone in dreading family reunions.

According to research conducted by VitalSmarts and the authors of the New York Times bestseller, Crucial Conversations, four out of five people have attended a "miserable" family reunion. However, despite the prevalence of dysfunctional family get-togethers, the research shows that a person's ability to hold crucial conversations can change their entire outlook on reuniting with family.

The study of more than 700 respondents reveals that whether you desire or dread your next family reunion is not determined by how likely you think family problems are to occur; rather, it's determined by whether or not you think you can solve them when they happen. Specifically, nine out of ten people who are skilled at holding crucial conversations enjoy their family reunions despite the unruly behavior of their relatives.

And according to the survey, it's almost inevitable that bad behavior will surface at your next family gathering.

Respondents report the three most common bad behaviors plaguing their family reunions include:
1) Bad attitudes and grumpy relatives
2) "Cold wars" between relatives who dislike and avoid one another
3) Conflict between relatives who don't get along
More than half of respondents fully expect this year's reunion will be spoiled by one or more of their relatives behaving in these and similar ways.

However, despite relatives' persistent bad behavior, fewer than one in ten people step up to and try to solve the problems. But when they do speak up, they don't necessarily speak up to the person at the root of the problem. Instead, half of the vocal respondents either complain to their spouse or vent to a relative they know will agree with them, while 13 percent talk to everyone except the person at the root of the problem.

Joseph Grenny, author of the national bestseller, Crucial Conversations, says that while we can't choose our relatives, we can choose the way in which we react to their behavior.

"Whether it's precedent, long-standing family dynamics, or plain old fear, something tells us that remaining silent will yield more results than confronting our relative's bad behavior," says Grenny. "And yet, what most people don't realize is that their silence and inability to hold candid and respectful conversations with their relatives is actually ruining relationships and driving families apart."

Grenny says that by developing these five skills, people can once again look forward to reuniting with family:

  • Work on me first. How you see your relatives determines how you treat them. To help soften judgments, ask yourself, "Why would a reasonable, rational and decent person do what they're doing?" For example, do you see your Uncle Fester with a poor driving record as criminally irresponsible or as harried and in need of help?
  • Make it safe. When confronting bad behavior, first help the other person know you care about his or her interests. For example, when approaching Uncle Fester who's coming down with the flu and kissing everyone he greets, begin with, "Uncle Fester, it wouldn't be a holiday if I didn't get one of your hugs. I'm glad you're so affectionate and warm to all of us, but . . . ."
  • Just the facts. Start with the facts and strip out accusatory, judgmental and inflammatory language. "Uncle Fester, I notice you are sick. And I noticed you've been dipping your chips in the bowl after biting half off . . . ."
  • Tentatively share concerns. Having laid out the facts, tell the person why you're concerned, but don't do it as an accusation--share it as an opinion. "My concern is that with all of us in such close proximity, we're all going to come down with the flu. I know you don't want that either."
  • Invite dialogue. After sharing your concerns, encourage the other person to share his--even if he disagrees with you. One of the best ways to persuade others is to listen to them. "So Uncle Fester, is there a way we can get your warmth and love without getting more than you mean to give? Or am I seeing this wrong?"

Evanston Feel Good Story

2006_0617Thomson0015.JPG Tuesday, 09 June 09 - 09:46 AM (GMT -06:00)
By John C Thomson in General

As a former pizza delivery man I can understand the risks of delivering pizzas at night to neighborhoods with less than stellar environments.  So when I read the story of the Papa John's driver who was accosted in the 100 block of Clyde here in Evanston I recognized the neighborhood as one fraught with danger.  I have to say however, that considering what it was several years ago, it has been improved upon considerably.  Still, southeast Evanston is home to much drug dealing and only a block from  Chicago's city limits.  But that is not the story here........

On this occasion a neighbor looking out the window saw 2 assailants attacking the pizza driver and called police.  The robbers were caught but in their attempt to escape they stole the drivers car and crashed it.

The next night, the witness and victim spent four hours together at the Evanston police station, waiting to view a lineup. It was there that the two got to know each other better, and Gutierrez (the witness) decided he wanted to do more. Gutierrez started collecting money money from neighbors to replace Walker's (the victim) 2003 Kia, which was totaled during the incident.

They had raised $1,700.00 after Gutierrez started a website explaining Walker 47, had minimal insurance on his car and did not expect his employer would replace it.

On Monday, after the Chicago Tribune reported on the community's effort, hundreds of readers joined the cause, donating nearly $7,000 as of late afternoon. "I am very proud," said Gutierrez, who said he had no time to eat or take a shower as he tried to keep up with the relentless e-mails.  A neighbor brought him lunch while he also worked to keep his Paypal account open after someone attempted to tamper with it.

"I am very happy I was able to help him," he said, adding in an e-mail, "it is raining donations!"  Gutierrez, who was laid off from his job as an architect four months ago0, also plans to continue to update his Website available via chicagotribune.com/clyde to report on what kind of car Walker buys and, when the court date for the two alleged attackers takes place.

Walker, who delivers pizza for Papa John's, also was overwhelmed by the outpouring of generosity.  "I just want to thank everybody who has helped me, especially Omar," said Walker, who lives in subsidized housing in Carol Stream. Walker who has no medical insurance, was cut and bruised in the attack. He earns $6.75 an hour plus tips and has worked for the same man for 16 years, following him to several pizza places.

After learning of his plight, the pizza chain offered to donate an additional $2,500.00 to help Walker--with $1,500 coming from the Papa John's franchise in Evanston where Walker works. The remaining $1,000 will come from an emergency fund through the corporate office.  Donations came from as far away as South Korea and Germany.

A former Chicago police commander who long has been accused of brutally abusing and torturing black criminal suspects now faces charges of perjury and obstruction of justice.

The FBI arrested former Chicago police Cmdr. Lt. Jon Burge at his home in Florida on Tuesday. He's charged with perjury and obstruction of justice for allegedly lying about the torture of suspects during a civil lawsuit in 2003.

For decades, criminal suspects on Chicago's South Side complained they'd been beaten with telephone books, burned with cigarettes, nearly suffocated with plastic typewriter covers — even subjected to electric shock — while being interrogated by detectives in the police district known as Area 2.

Who Is Jon Burge?

At the center of those allegations is Burge, who became a detective in Area 2 in 1972. Through much of the 1980s, he supervised detectives in the same area. The police department fired Burge in 1993.

A decade later, then-Illinois Gov. George Ryan found evidence of torture-coerced confessions that was compelling enough to pardon four men from death row.

In 2006, special state prosecutors concluded that more than 100 suspects, almost all of them black men, had been tortured and abused under Burge but that too much time had passed to file charges.

Burge, 60, has been living in Florida on a Chicago police pension. He had not faced criminal charges — until Tuesday.

"Jon Burge shamed his uniform and shamed his badge," Chicago U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said at a news conference Tuesday.

Fitzgerald said that according to the indictment, Burge "while working in Area 2 as a detective and later a sergeant and then a lieutenant, participated in and witnessed the abuse of people in police custody."

But just as the special prosecutors had found, Fitzgerald said the statute of limitations had run out on the alleged acts of brutality and torture.

So a grand jury handed up an indictment charging Burge with three counts of perjury and obstruction of justice.

Others May Be Prosecuted

Fitzgerald said his office started investigating Burge a couple of years ago after receiving the special prosecutors' report. He makes no apologies for not being able to bring charges of torture and abuse.

"If people commit multiple crimes and you can't prosecute them for one, there's nothing wrong with prosecuting him for another," he said. "If Al Capone went down for taxes, that was better than him going down for nothing."

For Flint Taylor, an attorney with the People's Law Office in Chicago, news of the charges against Burge was welcome and long overdue.

Taylor, who represents some of the alleged victims of police brutality, said he is pleased that 22 years after the first allegations of torture and cover-up, Burge has finally been charged.

"We are also aware that more investigation and more indictments must follow because it wasn't just Jon Burge," Taylor said. "There was a series of detectives and sergeants under his command who also tortured in a serial manner and who have also lied under oath as Burge has."

Fitzgerald said he has every reason to believe that other Chicago law enforcement officials participated in torture and abuse and lied about it — or knew about it and covered it up. He says they will still be prosecuted.

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley was a state's attorney during much of the time Burge and those under his command allegedly tortured suspects. Taylor and others have suggested that Daley knew about it and did nothing. But on Tuesday, Daley denied ever knowing about the torture accusations.

"I was very proud of my role as prosecutor," Daley said. "I was not the mayor, I was not the police chief, I did not promote this man in the '80s, so let's put everything into perspective."

The City of Chicago has paid nearly $45 million in legal defense bills and to settle lawsuits brought by victims who said they were tortured by Burge and his underlings.

Burge's attorney declined to comment. Burge appeared in federal court in Tampa on Tuesday and is free after posting a $250,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Chicago on Nov. 27.

Security is at Stake, Protect Sensitive Information Now Homeland Security Association to Offer Timely Certification
Information theft, corporate espionage, and trade secret compromises are at all-time highs. Is the average citizen armed with the training to protect sensitive personal and business documents? Damage from security breaches hit an all-time high for 2007, but 2008 may already be on pace to make this year the most dangerous in history for information security. During the first three months of 2008, security breaches ranged from the high-profile compromise of the passport records of three presidential candidates to a disturbing theft of credit information that was in transit from grocery stores to financial institutions. 2008-07-18

Skin Cancer Rate Soars Amongst the Young

2006_0617Thomson0015.JPG Monday, 14 July 08 - 12:11 PM (GMT -06:00)
By John C Thomson in General

Recent reports state that there is a potential time bomb regarding the health of Britain's youth. Is this down to a rise in cheap holidays and the national obsession with sun beds?

The incidence of the disease rises with age but there is some evidence that in the over-30s it has hit a plateau. However, in the 15 to 29 age group it is increasing at a faster rate. The message is sun protection. Use a sunscreen but, even more important, cover up and keep out of the midday sun.

London, UK (PRWEB) July 14, 2008 -- Some experts say that getting sunburnt just once in your life is enough to significantly increase your chances of developing skin cancer. Self tanning, or fake tan, products have long been marketed as a safe alternative. New products like Fake Bake have overcome the synthetic look of the original fake tan products. This new breed of treatments provides the look of a real tan without any of the associated risks.

Whether it is the intense exposure to sunlight on the annual family holiday or the increasingly powerful beds at the local tanning salon, the rates of malignant melanoma, the most lethal form of skin cancer, among the young have risen dramatically.

The increasing number of foreign holidays and almost universal access to sun beds has driven an increase in cases of skin cancer. It is currently responsible for around 2000 deaths a year.

The likelihood of developing skin cancer rises as the individual ages until it peaks around 35-40. The rate of cancer is starting to increase in people a lot younger than this.

"The incidence of the disease rises with age but there is some evidence that in the over-30s it has hit a plateau. However, in the 15 to 29 age group it is increasing at a faster rate. The message is sun protection. Use a sunscreen but, even more important, cover up and keep out of the midday sun." Professor Jillian Birch, an expert on teenage cancer from Manchester University said recently"

Sunburn is the main trigger for skin cancer and intermittent sun exposure increases the likelihood of the individual developing skin cancer at some point in the future. This intermittent exposure aligns with the fact that people take one or two holidays a year.
The British are well known for spending long periods of time in the sun simply to get a tan. This is usually done with the knowledge that they will burn. This reckless attitude is responsible for a 40% increase in cases of melanoma in recent years.

Although still a cause for concern, sun beds are the safer option when compared to the sun. This has led to a measurable difference in cases of skin cancer between affluent groups and poorer groups. Of the 1000 cases of cancer from 2000 to 2006, the incidence of cancer among the affluent group was almost double that of the poorer group.

This further re-enforces the dangers of frequent exposure to intense sun light.

There is some evidence that the expert's advice is being taken. The self tanning market is booming with self tanning products one of the highest selling skin care products available. Fake Bake is one of a number of the new generation of self tanning products. These new products incorporate various technologies that apparently emulate natural tanning. The self tanning industry is working hard to shake the common criticism of the artificial looking tan that older self tanning products gave.

It seems that a safe tan is becoming more and more desirable. However, it remains to be seen if this attitude will spread to the serious sun worshippers. Until then we can expect the rates of skin cancer to continue rising.

Take Your Soul by The Hand

2006_0617Thomson0015.JPG Wednesday, 09 July 08 - 10:58 AM (GMT -06:00)

I believe "The Secret" has given 'dreaming' a bad name.  Ofcourse I'm not speaking of the kind of dreaming one does when they are asleep but rather what one does when they long for something afar off.  What could have been or should have been.

I know those who just by their speech one can tell that life has beat them up.  Left them on the ground in shambles and a heap.

I love California for one reason, you can step out doors and see the mountains and the ocean and know, yes there is a God.  That scenery alone is so inspiring that I'm tempted to dream.

Here below is a three minute clip encouraging us to follow our dreams.  Not in some mystical fashion that supposedly has been kept secret from us but from our soul, God-given.   Enjoy, and if you do, leave a comment if you wish.
