Dramatic Increase in 'Tommy John' Surgery

Dramatic Increase in 'Tommy John' Surgery in Young Patients Cause for Concern

Upside to “Epidemic” Surgery: 83% Successful in Return to Play, New Research Finds

Orlando, Florida (Vocus/PRWEB ) July 5, 2008 -- Eighty-three percent of athletes who had “Tommy John” elbow reconstruction surgery were able to return to the same or better level of play, according to a study released today at the 2008 American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Annual Meeting at JW Marriott Orland Grande Lakes. While reassuring to athletes, the study authors find the trend of more and more young athletes requiring the surgery, alarming.

In the past 10 years, year-round baseball leagues have proliferated. So the best young pitchers are throwing many more pitches and learning to throw more difficult pitches. It’s great that the surgery is successful, but prevention of the injury should be the goal. Kids should be urged to rest and be careful about saving their arms, rather than leading to long-term problems at a young age.
“Before 1997 this surgery was performed on only 12 of 97 patients who were 18 or younger (12 percent),” said co-author E. Lyle Cain, MD, fellowship director for the American Sports Medicine Institute, Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Alabama. “In 2005 alone, 62 of the 188 operations performed, were on high school athletes, a third of the surgical group. The reality is that this surgery is successful and that’s good. But a disturbing trend of younger kids needing the surgery is troubling. This should be a wake-up call to parents and coaches that specialization in baseball where kids don’t get adequate time off is very dangerous.”

“Tommy John” surgery is a procedure where a damaged elbow ligament (Ulnar Collateral Ligament or UCL) is replaced with a tendon from elsewhere in the body. The surgery is named for Hall of Fame pitcher Tommy John, who was the first person to have the surgery in 1974. John returned to the major leagues and went on to win 164 games after the surgery. Prior to this historic surgery, a UCL injury was a career-ending injury.

In the study, 743 patients who had the Tommy John surgery were contacted for follow-up evaluations and completed a questionnaire about their recovery. The majority of the patients were baseball players (94.5 percent), the remaining 5.5 percent were involved in track, football or other sports. The study found that 622 patients (83 percent) returned to the previous level of competition or higher. Of the major league players, 75.5 percent returned to the same level of play. For minor league players 56 percent returned to the same level or higher. The average time from surgery to full competition was 11.6 months after reconstruction, according to study results. Additionally about 10 percent of the patients had complications, mostly minor.

“The increase in the number of UCL reconstructions being done now can be attributed to many things: improved diagnostic techniques, heightened awareness, increased chance of positive outcome with current surgical techniques, but most importantly, the overuse of young throwing arms,” said Dr. Cain. “In the past 10 years, year-round baseball leagues have proliferated. So the best young pitchers are throwing many more pitches and learning to throw more difficult pitches. It’s great that the surgery is successful, but prevention of the injury should be the goal. Kids should be urged to rest and be careful about saving their arms, rather than leading to long-term problems at a young age.”

Go Cubs Go

2006_0617Thomson0015.JPG Wednesday, 03 October 07 - 02:04 PM (GMT -06:00)
By John C Thomson in All Sports

I'm feeling a little better today about the Cubs chances but remember I said a little better.  Remember what they use to say about Rex Grossman that there was a 'good Rex' and a "Bad Rex".  Well. Big Z has those same kind of charecterisitcs.  He can look like Cy Young one day and well, take your pick Jose Contreras the next.  What you say, there is actually someone named Cy Young and you didn't mean Chris Young?

The trouble with predicting who is going to win is that one usually starts out by saying 'if such and such happens then we have a chance."  That is not predicting, thats guessing.  You might as well say 'if we score more runs than  the opponent, then we'll win."  So, I've been looking for that clue that will give me the edge in making my prediction.  And here it is Cubs fans.  Webb is a sinkerball pitcher which plays right into the swings of Soriano, Lee and Ramirez.  We will win tonight 9 to 1.  Arizona will be shell-shocked into submission and Lilly will come out the next night and have one bad inning but will pull it together and the Cubs will come from behind and pull it out 7 to 4.  Now when we come back to Chicago with a 2 games to none lead the city will be crazy with delerious fans running amok in the streets.

Todd Stroger and Mayor Daley will immediately raise taxes hoping to blind side the fans and they'l never know what hit them.  When the wake the next morning with the 4 to 0 win safely behind them they won't care.

Now if you have a better turn out write and let me know.

Cubs, A Maybe

2006_0617Thomson0015.JPG Tuesday, 02 October 07 - 12:37 PM (GMT -06:00)
By John C Thomson in All Sports

Ok, this looks like I am sitting on the fence and the truth is I'm torn.  I've been a diehard Cub fan like everyone else and I am tired of dieing.  Yes, we have some capable players but they are to inconsistent.

What happened to Derek Lee?  Yes, he hit over .300 as did Ramirez but I think that wrist injury from last year is affecting his power and Ramirez is hurt as well.  Soriano is like a Dave Kingman with skills.  Its all or nothing.

If the Cubs are indeed a warm weather team than Arizona is where they need to be but then again the games are at night.  Theriot and Fonenot haven't played this much baseball in their short careers and at least Theriot is playing tired.  The best man on the team right now is Jaque Jones.

Lou Pinella is the X factor.  He has to go with Soto behind the plate or Arizona is going to run all over Kendall.  Will Lou have the heart to sit Dempster down and go with Howry or Marmol.  And I would not be afraid to use Hart as a set up man and let Marmol close a 1 run game.

Arizona has pitching and thats what wins playoff games.

Walleye Fishing Experts Answer Any Walleye Fishing Question Instantly

A free walleye fishing website has been released where walleye fishing experts answer any walleye fishing question within 24 hours.

Ventura, CA (PRWEB) October 2, 2007 -- While one of least popular freshwater species to catch, Walleye fishing is a niche that has been largely ignored on the Internet. Catfish, Crappie, and Bass are far more popular in terms of number of fishermen out there. On the other hand, Walleye Fishermen are some of the most rabid of all.

News Image

Fishing researcher, Dan Eggertsen, has decided to give Walleye Fishermen the attention they deserve with his new website Ask Walleye Fishing.

Dan, and his panel of Walleye Fishing experts are fielding questions from Walleye Fishermen throughout North America in hopes of bringing more exposure to the hobby, and also to satisfy the knowledge gap that exists between beginners and experts.

There is no cost to ask a question on the site, and when asked why, Dan responded, "I don't believe fishermen should be charged to have their questions answered by experts. There are a lot of free fishing forums on the Internet where guys are having their questions answered daily. The problem is, you don't know who the information is coming from, and what location of the country the guy lives in. There is a disconnect between question asker and answerer on fishing forums - in most cases. I just wanted to provide a free service where Walleye fishermen know they are getting their specific questions answered by the best. My ultimate goal is for the site to be known as the best resource for Walleye Fishing information in North America."

There are 3 experts fielding the questions now, and Dan plans to expand this to 10 experts as the site gets more exposure.

You can visit Dan's site at:

Here we go again

2006_0617Thomson0015.JPG Thursday, 27 September 07 - 09:40 AM (GMT -06:00)
By John C Thomson in All Sports

So, it's like I said, the Cubs are taking us to the precipice and going to push us over.  It happened again last night.  Jason Marquis who has been anything but a marquee pitcher talked Lou into leaving him in one more batter.  You know what happened, he gave up another hit and another run.  This would not have happened in Wrigley Field. Had Lou gone to the mound in Wrigley and left Jason in, Lou would have received the chorus of boos that would have surely followed.

Let me repeat, the Cubs have shown enough ineptitude at various times in the season that they have the wherewithal to blow this thing.  I can feel it in my blood.  It's the Brewers who, if they keep winning will over take the Cubs by two games.  If the Brewers draw even with the Cubs in the next two days then its a sure bet the Cubs will fold.

Go Cubs Go

2006_0617Thomson0015.JPG Tuesday, 25 September 07 - 09:22 AM (GMT -06:00)
By John C Thomson in All Sports

My son hates the song "Go Cubs Go".  It's like little leagues he says.  I kinda like it, what the heck, at my age I can use a little 'little league' in my life.  We're holding on for dear life now aren't we?  I remember many years ago we had a guy named Tony Taylor and another guy named Taylor Phillips.  So many 'tailors' that we were going to sew up the flag before the season ever started wrote one sports writer, yeah, that happened, didn't it.

And what about these new breed of fans?  They've been spoiled by the infrequent trips to the playoffs these last 25 years and actually wonder if we have a chance.  In my day it wasn't that difficult.  You rooted for Ernie Banks to hit 44 homeruns and over 100 rbi's but learned not to expect the unusual.  And then 1969!  You think Steve Bartman broke your hearts?  Nothing compared to '69 was as punishing except maybe the Great Depression or 1929.

The thing about this club is that they have played with enough ineptitude at various points of the season that we are sitting here knowing all to well the ceiling could collapse but we don't want to acknowledge it to loudly for fear of 'talking it up'.  Bringing it to pass if you will.

Dare I watch the game tonight or will that bring bad luck, maybe wait til the 4th inning and take a peak to see if we're winning.

Play the FantasyFanatics.com Weekly Rankings Game
Carson Palmer threw for 400 yards and six touchdowns. Cleveland quarterback Derek Anderson notched 328 yards and five touchdowns. In the world of fantasy football, their performances were good for 39 and 32 points in a standard Yahoo fantasy football league, respectively. Tampa Bay's Joey Galloway found the end zone twice, racking up 25 fantasy points. Don't forget the Texans' Andre Johnson, who racked up 24 fantasy points and is over 40 on the season. Their performances illustrate what makes fantasy football so appealing: Just like in football, on any given Sunday, anyone can win. FantasyFanatics.com, the premiere fantasy sports community, has taken this to heart and introduced the Weekly Rankings Contest. 2007-09-18

Cubs Win!! Cubs Win!! Cubs Win!!

2006_0617Thomson0015.JPG Tuesday, 18 September 07 - 09:22 AM (GMT -06:00)
By John C Thomson in All Sports

They're going to take this down to the wire and make nervous wrecks out of all of us.  Mark DeRosa stood out like a beacon in the night as he guided the Cubs to an awesome finish in berating Cincinatti 7 to 6 last night.

I don't have cable so I was left to listen to the game on the radio.  Pat Hughes formerly with the Milwaukee organization does a fine job of broadcasting and tolerating Ron Santo's sometimes painfully groanings when the Cubs mess up.

David Weathers, formerly with the Brewers and the Cubs wilted in the 9th doing a Ryan Dempster impersonation and imploding when it counts the most.  Cincinatti helped with their unexplainable defensive move taking out the centerfielder and putting him in the infield.  And who don't you want to face with the game on the line, surely not someone who has gone 4 for 4 already.  And yet they walk Ward to get to DeRosa.  Why not walk DeRose as well and set up a force at any base.

I'm even more nervous now that I understand Milwaukee finishes the season with 6 games at home.

WNBA's Helen Darling pens "Hide N Seek Monday"

2006_0617Thomson0015.JPG Thursday, 16 August 07 - 10:41 PM (GMT -06:00)
By John C Thomson in All Sports

Darling will officially become an author during a book signing at The Fan Shop store Aug. 17, (immediately following the Silver Stars/Indiana Fever game at the AT&T Center) when her children's book, "Hide N Seek Monday," will be released to the public.

We do activities everyday, all of which are somehow a learning tool. I've been to several book stores but I haven't found many books about the days of the week. My work is different because it's about my triplet's adventures, helping children associate an activity with a day of the week.

San Antonio, TX (PRWEB) August 16, 2007 -- Many of Helen Darling's accomplishments have come in the form of dishing out career-high assists or scoring the winning basket at the buzzer. But in August, Darling, a point guard with the WNBA San Antonio Silver Stars (www.wnba.com/silverstars), will unveil a project she's been working on for some time now--a new children's book.

News Image

Darling will officially become an author during a book signing at The Fan Shop store Aug. 17, (immediately following the Silver Stars/Indiana Fever game at the AT&T Center) when her children's book, "Hide N Seek Monday," will be released to the public.

"Hide N Seek Monday," is both the concept and the title of a new book series that tells the story of triplets--JaJuan, Jalen and Nevaeh--who wake up early one Monday morning and decide to surprise their mother by hiding from her. The triplets find creative places to hide and when mother enters to wake them for school, and she does not see her children, the game begins. Checking bed covers, under the bed, even the toy chest, mother eventually finds all three children. During the process of seeking, mother and children create their own playtime magic full of energetic chants, songs and fun.

"I am a mother of triplets with a degree in education, so education is big in my home," Darling says. "We do activities everyday, all of which are somehow a learning tool. I've been to several book stores but I haven't found many books about the days of the week. My work is different because it's about my triplet's adventures, helping children associate an activity with a day of the week."

Children will fall in love with the creative triplets and not realize the subtle learning that is hidden within the words. While reading "Hide N Seek Monday," children will build their vocabulary as objects in a bedroom are itemized. They will also receive a refresher on counting and exposure to rhyme and rhythm through the chorus of words. Finally, the appendix offers parents and children fun activities to enjoy. Parents and teachers will enjoy fun-filled stories based on Darling's five-year-old triplets. Each day the triplets complete an activity which helps them learn the days of the week. "Hide N Seek Monday," also includes extensions at the end for parents and teachers.

"Hide N Seek Monday" (ISBN-13 978-0-9797674-0-1), ISBN-10 0-9797674-0-7) is 32 pages and sells for $10. The book is available for purchase online at Borders.com and Amazon.com, and is also available for purchase on the publisher's Web site at www.helendarling.com

RevFire First to Measure Spin Rate on Baseball and Softball Pitches

2006_0617Thomson0015.JPG Thursday, 22 March 07 - 01:39 PM (GMT -06:00)
By John C Thomson in All Sports

As pitchers fiercely compete for a spot on the team roster in spring training, new technology is announced that can shed light on their performance. The newly released RevFire is the first product that can measure the spin rate of a pitched ball.

Boulder, Colorado (PRWEB) March 22, 2007 -- As pitchers fiercely compete for a spot on the team roster in spring training, new technology is announced that can shed light on their performance. The newly released RevFire is the first product that can measure the spin rate of a pitched ball. The handheld RevFire displays the spin rate of a pitch in revolutions per second (RPS) as well as the speed in miles per hour (MPH). Strong spin is required to put 'movement' on a fastball or to throw an effective curveball, slider, sinker, or screwball. Until now pitchers and coaches lacked the benefit of performance feedback in hard numbers.

Putting movement on a pitch and throwing effective breaking balls are fundamental in the major leagues. But even highly paid professional pitchers can lose their edge. Sometimes a lack of effectiveness of their breaking ball pitches may be to blame. In the January 26, 2007 issue of Collegiate Baseball, Coach John Pinkman, director of the Pinkman Baseball Academy in Virginia, noted that with the RevFire "Coaches can utilize the hard numbers to indicate a pitcher tiring or 'losing' his curve." Coach Pinkman also stated that with the RevFire, "Pitchers get instant feedback for more effective training."

According to Mike White, a member of the USA National Men's Fastpitch Softball team, "Before the RevFire, I had to rely on visual determination of the amount of spin in analyzing my students. Now coaches have a tool that can measure spin rate, which directly corresponds to the amount of movement possible for each pitch."

The deceptive curveball pitch has been studied and mathematically described by many scientists over the last half century. Their mathematical equations are consistent; more spin creates more curve. NASA has a website where visitors can see the calculated trajectory of a pitch from pitcher rubber to home plate for user-selected spin rates (http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/K-12/airplane/foil2b.html). The NASA website demonstrates the dramatic impact an increase in spin rate has on the curvature of a ball's flight.

Since the advent of radar gun technology, speed statistics on pitchers have been widely available and are key to athlete evaluation and advancement. The RevFire's patented technology makes possible the collection of spin data on pitchers at all levels of play, creating a new metric for the measurement and improvement of performance. Coach Mike White predicts, "I can envision RPS being as common in judging pitchers in the future as MPH is today."

RevFire Corporation is an electronics design and manufacturing company specializing in sporting goods products. More information about the company and its products is available at www.RevFire.com.

I can envision RPS being as common in judging pitchers in the future as MPH is today.

Rent Golf Balls -- True Advertising Case History From Hard-Boiled Ad Guy Stan Cotton

Odd ball case history. In True Case Histories from the Files of Stan Cotton, Hard-boiled Ad Man, Stan Cotton discusses his client who had a new and improved golf ball, but the public wasn't buying any that didn't say Titleist or Top-Flite on the cover. The client find himself in the market with his better mousetrap and no marketing plan.

Rancho Mirage, CA (PRWEB) March 22, 2007 -- Hard-boiled Ad Man Stan Cotton preferred his new clients solvent and local as in Los Angeles. This one was broke and calling from Princeton, New Jersey.

The caller had balls, a warehouse full of them, it seems, but the public wasn't buying any golf balls that didn't say Titleist or Acushnet on the cover.

I've invented an indestructible golf ball and I can't sell them for love nor money.
Cotton listened through 3,000 miles of phone line and heard the oldest get-poor-fast story since once upon a time. Man builds a better mousetrap and creditors beat a path to his door while he's dicking around trying to figure out how to sell the damn things.

"I'm Dr. Calvin, a plastics chemist," said a voice thin and sick with desperation. "I've invented an indestructible golf ball and I can't sell them for love nor money."

"It'll take money," said Cotton. "Love I got."

Roxie, his secretary, brought him a warmed up cup of yesterday's coffee and cracked her gum irritably. She hadn't been paid in six weeks and she was out of Juicy Fruit.....

For a pre-publication gander at True Case Histories from the Files of Stan Cotton, Hard-boiled Ad Man, click here or go to www.PickCotton.com for a pulp fiction treatment of an ad legend's crusade against the forces of timidity and marketplace myopia.

Says Cotton about putting his headline-generating ad campaigns of the 60s, 70s 80s and 90's into tough guy gumshoe lingo: "In looking back at a career that made me a fortune and got me thrown out of some pretty classy board rooms, I keep going back to a theme: clients want a brand new idea that's thoroughly proven. Many times I felt like a hard case private dick doing battle with mean cops and clueless clients."

So Cotton had a little fun taking the facts of his most outrageous "cases" and writing them up Mickey Spillane style. They read like a detective potboiler, all while dramatizing timeless truths that must be mastered for a client to triumph in the marketplace.

Only a small percentage of people could go to the games and television was just beginning. Where America really watched their baseball heroes in action was at the movies. Now, these memories are available on DVD.”
